Marigolds, candles and favorite foods: how families keep the Día de los Muertos tradition alive at a green burial preserve.
On November 1 and 2, families across California build ofrendas, cook favorite dishes and tell stories about the people they miss. Día de los Muertos is not a sad holiday. It is a joyful invitation for the dead to come home for a little while.
A tradition that fits the land
Green burial and Día de los Muertos share an idea: death is part of a cycle, and the people we love stay connected to the earth and to us. At Morgan Oaks, families often bring marigolds, photos and small offerings to a loved one’s resting place among the oaks.
Ideas for a graveside ofrenda
- Fresh cempasúchil (marigolds), which are biodegradable and safe for the meadow
- A framed photo you take home at the end of the visit
- A favorite food or drink shared as a picnic with family
- Candles in glass holders, used only while you are present
- Handwritten notes, read aloud and then carried home
Keeping it natural
Because the preserve is a living habitat, we ask families to leave only natural items behind and to take home anything plastic, metal or glass. Our team is happy to help you plan a visit, including a quiet time to gather.
If you would like to visit during the holiday, call (833) 667-4266 and we will make sure the gardens are ready for you.
