Green Burial

Green burial lays your loved one to rest directly in protected, living ground — in a biodegradable shroud or casket, with no embalming and no concrete vault. The body returns to the soil naturally, and the land itself is conserved and restored as a permanent, peaceful place your family can visit.

Human Composting

Human composting (also called natural organic reduction or terramation) gently transforms the body into soil inside a controlled vessel over several weeks. The resulting soil is returned to the family or donated to land restoration.

Both are sustainable. Both are meaningful. The right choice depends on your values, your timeline, your budget — and, in California, on what’s actually available to you today.

A Note for California Families

Here in California, this is where the two paths differ most.

Green burial is available now. At Morgan Oaks in Placer County, we can welcome your family and lay your loved one to rest on conserved land close to home.

Human composting is legal in California but not yet operating here. While Assembly Bill 351 made the practice lawful, the state’s first facilities are still in development. Today, a California family choosing composting must arrange for their loved one to be transported out of state — most often to Washington — and for the resulting soil to be shipped back. That distance can add cost, time, and complexity at an already tender moment.
